I’ve been trying hard to avoid writing a blog about the upcoming Presidential election, but people keep asking me the same question. What’s going to happen to the economy when Hillary or Donald get elected?

Truth is, who knows?

Right now, I’m actually grieving for our country. It’s easy to grieve over the fact that our two major parties have given us candidates that have higher disapproval ratings than approval ratings. When I was in Uganda, we visited a church and many in the congregation laughed at the United States for even considering either one of our candidates for the office of President.

I grieve that we have so many uninformed voters. People basing their decision in this most crucial time on 10 second sound bites or tweets rather than researching where someone stands on the issues. Voters who can’t name the vice presidential candidate or even who their candidate is running against.

I keep hoping that the politicians will disappear and the statesmen will return. Statesmen who will do what’s best for the country regardless of what party they are in or regardless of who is courting their favor.

I grieve that we are such a fractured society. It used to be that we were all Americans. You might have come from Ireland, or Japan, but we were Americans. Now we’re African Americans, Latinos, White, Straight, Gay, Pro Life, Environmentalist, Muslim, Christian, Liberal, Conservative.

I grieve that we have so many hungry people in our country, not to mention the world, and our elected representatives spend their time debating transgender bathrooms. We have important issues to solve, but no one wants to tackle them. There is no leadership, only the desire to get re-elected.

I don’t know what will happen to the economy if Donald or Hillary wins. I do know that to truly make America great again, we need an involved electorate who will stand up and make the people in Washington work for them. We need an informed electorate who will take the time to listen and study candidates’ positions and not turn that responsibility over to the press and be fed on their soundbites. We need an electorate that demands their elected representatives do what is right for this country and not what simply gets them re-elected. And we need an electorate that is willing to give up a little in order to do what is right for all the country.
