It seems that every day we are bombarded with more “what ifs” and uncertainty. Events and news travel at such velocity it seems the only thing certain anymore, is uncertainty.
In spite of this uncertainty, we as Christians know that some things never change. One of those things is that God is still in control and the Bible is still as relevant today as it ever was.
I believe the Bible sets forth five keys to financial security regardless of the economic condition of our country. These five keys are:

  • Understand that God owns it all.
  • Avoid a consumptive lifestyle.
  • Avoid the use of debt.
  • Maintain a savings program.
  • Set long-term goals.

There are other biblical principals for managing money, but these five cover every economic situation. A core belief that God owns it all affords us the attitude that we are only managers of God’s property, not owners. That which He gives, He can also take away. Little or no debt frees us to more easily share what we have with others in need. Also, no matter what we face; inflation, deflation, or political or economic upheaval, those with the least debt will fare the best.

Proverbs 13:11 says, “He who gathers little by little, causes it to grow.” You can sum it up this way, spend less than you earn and do it for a long period of time and you will seldom be in financial trouble.

In 1 Timothy 5:8 it says, “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” This can mean different things to different people. For some it may mean purchasing life insurance; for others it may mean caring for your loved ones as they age. It all involves long-term planning.

These biblical concepts are perhaps more relevant today than they ever have been. They are no guarantee for financial success but I do believe that in following them we can stand before our Lord on judgment day and say with confidence, “Lord I managed your resources well.” In return we may hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things, now I will put you in charge of many.”
